Fall is the time when we need to update our vaccinations. This issue’s TIP includes valuable information about this year’s vaccines and, with Covid-19 rates rising, the latest Covid-19 vaccine.  We also discuss the timing of and eligibility recommendations for Pneumococcal pneumonia, Shingles (zoster) and Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough) or Td (tetanus and diphtheria) and RSV vaccines. 
 
Check out the upcoming Caring Collaborative events, including “The Peaceful Power Workshop” on Wednesday, September 19th and “Medicare Open Enrollment - What You  Need to Know for 2025” on Thursday, November 14th. Also, in September be sure to check out how to “Ease and Prevent Back Pain” on Monday, September 23rd .

Older Women Are Different Than Older Men. Their Health Is Woefully Understudied

Medical research has shortchanged women for decades. This is particularly true of older women, leaving physicians without critically important information about how to best manage their health.

Late last year, the Biden administration promised to address this problem with a new effort called the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research. That inspires a compelling question: What priorities should be on the initiative’s list when it comes to older women?

TIP – 2024 CDC Vaccine Recommendations for Older Adults

As we get older, our immune systems tend to weaken over time, putting us at higher risk for certain diseases. CC member Ina Goldberg, an Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, summarizes the most current information on recommendations by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) that are important for adults 65 and older.
 
 

Summary of the New York State Master Plan for Aging: Building Age-Friendly Communities

New York State is undertaking a comprehensive evaluation and revamping of services and supports for older adults. The outcome of this process will affect the quality of life of all New Yorkers for many years to come.
