Free Workshop Series for all Women's Connection Members
Aging Alone Together is for adults 60+ who identify as a “solo ager:” any individual who, by choice or circumstance, functions without the support system traditionally provided by family.
This is a 6 session flagship program for solo agers offered by DOROT, a New York City nonprofit organization addressing the challenges of an aging population. The workshop offers strength-based practical ways to help solo agers prepare for the future. Sessions are led by DOROT trained facilitators, social workers, and staff. In this special, in-person six-week workshop, participants study topics like social and support networks, home safety, healthcare and financial paperwork, organization of home and papers, advance care planning, and other changes that we experience in the normal aging cycle.
Objectives:
- Identify your solo aging priorities and develop strategies to meet them
- Explore approaches to build and maintain community as you age
- Examine challenges specific to solo agers
- Recognize that you are not alone in your solo aging journey
Each two-hour session contains:
- Information about the week’s topic
- Short videos featuring experts and solo agers who share their experiences and strategies to work through barriers
- Discussion groups with other solo agers led by a trained Discussion Leader
- Tools to personalize information, set priorities, and plan actionable next steps
- Emotional support and encouragement from the Aging Alone Together community
Comments from Aging Alone Together participants:
- “Just the together part. Just that somebody’s acknowledging the fact there’s so many of us. ... it does help. I’m not the only one. It’s not just me.”
- “It opened the internal conversation about a list of things I knew I should be thinking about.”
- “I purposely avoided panels on growing old because the subject can feel overwhelming. However, I now feel hopeful and energized and reminded of the steps I can take to build a network of support.”
