Contrary to popular opinion, suburbs such as Levittown relied on a largely unseen group of low-income workers who supported homes, maintained lawns, and served local businesses. Paradoxically, federal housing assistance contributed to the creation of poverty in these communities, instead of eradicating it. In his book, “In Levittown’s Shadow: Poverty in America’s Wealthiest Postwar Suburb,” Tim Keogh contends that inequality was inherent in the development of suburban areas. Using Long Island as a case study, the lived experiences of marginalized workers, and the shortcomings of policymakers in addressing the needs of the suburban poor.

Florida Atlantic University Theater
The play: Get ready for the captivating new musical By Any Other Name by Deborah Zoe Laufer (Winner of the 2025 Carbonell Award for her play The Last Yiddish Speaker) and Daniel Green (composer and lyricist)
This innovative production re-imagines Shakespeare‘s iconic female characters. After four hundred years of Macbeth, Shakespeare’s Three Witches decide to spice up their recipe by throwing nine of the Bard’s characters from other plays into the cauldron - most of them heroines destined for a tragic end. What ensues is a mash-up of epic proportions as characters like Juliet, Ophelia, Rosalind, and more find themselves magically transported to the same forest, where together they grapple with love, loss, identity, and the constraints of gender roles. In a contemporary setting. With a dynamic pop/rock soundtrack, the musical follows these beloved characters as they forge their own paths and challenge traditional gender roles. Is their destiny in the stars or in themselves?

Philadelphia Episcopal Church
All Women‘s Connection members are welcome to assist, as we set up the OCIYN pop-up shop. This mobile basic needs program provides free clothing, food, and access to services throughout neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Along with JFCS personnel, volunteers assist in setting up clothing racks and tables, managing the farmer‘s market stand, helping shoppers make their selections, and checking out shoppers when they are done. This is a great opportunity for the “shoppers” to get to know you and for you to get to know them.
Please be aware that this activity requires some physical strength, removing clothes from large bags, hanging them up as well as considerable time on your feet.
