Member Story - Meet Lisa Nabbefeld

Interviewed by  - Patty Petersen

“After enjoying the program offerings for so long, I decided to give back and serve on the Program Committee.” - Lisa Nabbefeld

Lisa, who has been involved in our chapter since its beginning, lives in south Minneapolis. She is a member of the Program Committee, the finance and hiking SIGs, and the new retirement peer group.

Women’s Connection History

I heard about Women’s Connection (formerly The Transition Network) when it was in its earliest beginnings. I was approached by my co-worker Karen West, who excitedly introduced the idea of a Minnesota chapter and invited me to the kickoff events at the public library. Attracted by the keynote speakers (Catherine Watson, Strib travel writer, and Amy Lindgren of Prototype Career Services), I attended and was hooked.

Things started off with monthly and quarterly workshops and speakers. The Second Half of Life book group launched, and participation grew. In time, we had enough participants to qualify as a chapter and the SIGS continued to expand. I have deep gratitude for those who have stepped up into leadership roles and initiated program offerings.

Wisconsinite to Minnesotan

I grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, in a charming historic neighborhood and a house that was in my family for 95 years. After a junior-year study-abroad program in France, I completed my degree in education from UW-Madison. On a visit to the Twin Cities, I became enamored by the vibrant city, the lakes and the parks and decided to relocate. I returned to grad school for a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Psychological Services, and interned at the University of St. Thomas.

Career

I retired in 2022. My career spanned over 40 years and included college admissions, student services, career counseling, employment services, human resources, recruitment and job placement. I also worked for a time as Director of Activities and Volunteer Coordinator with the elderly.

Women’s Connection Today

Many of my connections came from my professional life. Once I retired, my identity and interests began to shift and evolve. I find it interesting to meet new people with no previously shared context, such as work, career, school, or mutual friends, and to build relationships based on and grounded in Special Interest Groups or program experiences.

Women’s Connection continues to be incredibly rewarding to me. I like connecting with other members with curiosity and finding common ground. I appreciate the sense of community and belonging and the range of offerings. These have included themed garden parties, engaging speakers and workshops, book discussions, the Blue Zones challenge, and the Second Half of Life book group.

Other Interests

I love nature and the outdoors and enjoy biking, kayaking, cross-country skiing, gardening and lake walks. I also enjoy theater, film, reading, historic home tours and international travel.
