(July & August Women’s Connection Events)

Private Tour of “Americans in Paris” at the new Grey Art Museum– July 9

Nineteen members enjoyed a private tour of “Americans in Paris – Artists Working in Postwar France”, the inaugural exhibit at NYU’s brand-new Grey Art Museum in NoHo. We viewed work by American expatriates and the Parisian colleagues who influenced them between 1949 and 1962.

  • Terrific tour of this new space. Wonderful guide, wonderful art and excellent story of the influence of postwar Paris on these artists, some well-known and others not so well known. Highly recommend.
  • We had an excellent docent take us through this most interesting exhibit.
  • The tour and guide were wonderful. It gave me an entirely new perspective on abstract painting. I regret not purchasing a book on the exhibit.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Our highly knowledgeable docent elucidated the movements and sub-movements that characterized the Paris art scene and contrasted them to trends taking place in the US. A convivial lunch followed, providing an opportunity to enjoy the company of fellow participants.
  • The “Private Tour of “Americans in Paris” was wonderful. The curator’s deep knowledge and passion regarding abstract art definitely enriched the experience. I left with a much deeper appreciation of abstract art. What I also found interesting was how the GI bill had an impact on American artists, allowing them to study Art in Paris after World War II. I'm looking forward to visiting the museum again for the next exhibit.

Picnic Mingle in the Park – July 19

We again gathered on the lawn in Central Park where 27 of us enjoyed the beautiful weather of this July day. It was great to see so many new faces, both members, friends, and guests.

  • Everybody was very friendly. I really enjoyed this event!
  • It was great meeting members I’ve never met before.

Private Tour of M&S Schmalberg, NYC's Last Custom Fabric Flower Factory – July 23

This is the third time we’ve arranged a tour of M&S Schmalberg, NYC's Last Custom Fabric Flower Factory. Eight of us toured with Adam Brand, whose family has continuously operated the business since 1916. We viewed how fabrics are cut and shaped using antique tools, then hand-finished into unique, wearable flowers. The company works closely with clothing and theatrical designers and sells to individuals who visit their showroom or buy just a few flowers online.

Private Walking Tour of Spanish Harlem’s Murals & Mosaics – August 7

Nine Women's Connection members braved the rain to enjoy a private walking tour of Spanish Harlem's murals and mosaics along with Leigh Hallingby, a licensed New York City tour guide who specializes in Harlem, Morningside Heights, the Upper West Side and Washington Heights. The tour was followed by a fun lunch at East Harlem Bottling Company.

  •  I greatly enjoyed the tour. The art was very interesting, as was seeing and learning a bit about the Spanish Harlem history and community. Thank you.
  • Leigh was a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide and the mosaics were beautiful. --This tour opened my eyes to the charms of Spanish Harlem. And what a great group to share the experience — and lunch — with!
  • I enjoyed our walk, in a neighborhood I knew little about, with a nice group!  Our guide, Leigh, was pleasant and informative, and I was interested to see the murals and mosaics in the neighborhood as well as to learn about the history of the area and the artists.

Member Mingle in Murray Hill – August 27

Another great mingle. There were 55 members, friends of members and guests who attended this event at one of our favorite locations in Murray Hill. There was a great feeling of it being like a reunion, with so many saying “it’s been so long since I’ve seen you!”
  • It was excellent!
  • The event was well attended!
  • Excellent - the place was great. Snacks were plentiful. Nice crowd.
  • I met a few new members that I would like to get to know better!
  • Thank you for organizing this event.

Caring Collaborative Orientation – August 28

In the Orientation, attendees learned the three pillars of giving and getting help through the CC: Confidentiality, Boundaries, and Sharing Experience. And had the opportunity to meet other members of the CC right away. The Orientation provides important information about how the systems work and about the process of giving and receiving help. It's no wonder over 70% of Women's Connection members are a part of the Caring Collaborative!

  • Very enjoyable. The event leaders did a great job!
  • It was great!
  • Very informative and straightforward.
