Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Greetings from East Tennessee. I'm a Southern California transplant who moved here almost 2 years ago via Atlanta (2019-2024), I've also lived in Rhode Island (for college), Washington DC (first job after college) and San Francisco in my twenties and early thirties. My husband and I found a slice of heaven in our property: a 1940's farmhouse on 3.5 acres with a beautiful creek that's the back border of our land.
I'm learning organic gardening and my vision is to have a food forest and some structures where I can host events like women's circles and yoga workshops on my land. I don't have any biological children, just one adult step-daughter, who is about to get married later in the year; two dogs and one cat.
What brought you to Women’s Connection Coast to Coast?
I'm hoping to make meaningful connections, learn and be inspired by other women.
What transition are you anticipating going through or contemplating?
I completed menopause about three years ago so I am noticing changes in my body as a result of that. Also, my parents are a bit far away so I anticipate helping to support them more as they age. Lastly, I'm newer to town so I am still finding my tribe here in Knoxville.
What advice do you have for Coast to Coast members who are considering a career change?
I'm not so good at this personally, but definitely networking, spreading the word to as many circles as possible, and asking for help.
What advice do you have for Coast to Coast members who are planning to retire?
I’m still working.
How do you have fun?
I love exercising and moving, so to me anything involving moving my body is fun --hiking, gardening, dancing, working out at the gym. I had chronic pain in my 30s, but now that I understand what causes pain and how to move better, I really enjoy pushing my limits a little bit more. It feels so empowering to be stronger now than I was 20 years ago!
What have you learned from all of the transitions you have experienced in life so far?
Hmm, that's a big question. I feel like asking for help is a big one for me. I've always "done things by myself" and I can get into a shell when I am stressed so for me to recognize when I need help and to ask for it is a big deal. I think another one is to trust that things will work out, they might not be exactly as I planned, but sometimes it's actually better that way!
What new things do you want to explore?
Gardening, learning about plants (foraging, propagating, etc),
Describe a personal transformation you are most proud of and why?
Learning to love and listen to my body instead of judging and hating it. When I was in my twenties, I was very much in my head, then a series of accidents and life changes (divorce, career change, financial issues) overloaded my nervous system and I developed chronic pain. At first, I really attacked the pain by overdoing things and chasing more and more healing modalities, until I realized that I wasn't really listening to my body, just pushing its messages away. Anyhow, it's been a long journey, but I'm proud to be more at home in my body now and to be able to hear and listen to its messages more clearly and consistently.
What do you love most about the place where you are currently living?
The abundance of nature that’s all around here. Just last week as I was driving to the gym, an eagle flew overhead, she/he was being chased by two crows! There’s deer, turtles, foxes, groundhogs, woodpeckers and even a blue heron that I see often on my land. Plus, the mountains are only a few hours away, there’s so many beautiful little mountain towns nearby which retreat centers, artist galleries and the like.
What keeps you engaged and vibrant?
Learning new things, having meaningful conversations, traveling, moving.
What are your passion projects?
I'm working on a slide-show "book" in celebration of my husband's 50th birthday (he's a baby, LOL); the food forest garden where I'm planting perennials and complementary annuals and hoping to create an ecosystem where mother nature takes care of it all, so that I don’t have to work as hard, eventually.
What is next on the horizon or what are you enjoying in the present moment?
Since I moved to Knoxville from Atlanta, I've transitioned my yoga teaching to online only. I'm figuring out the technology, and also figuring out how to talk about what I do better..
What motto do you live by or what quote inspires you?
The serenity prayer.
What fun fact about yourself would you like to share?
I’ve jumped out of a plane before!
What’s one unique skill and talent you have that only your closest friends know about you?
I'm a good intuitive cook. I can create something delicious from what's available in the moment, because I have a good feel for what flavors work well together.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to who you were ten years ago?
Protect your focus, energy and attention more carefully.
How do you keep your vitality?
See above. And also play, be real (honest about my emotions), move, share, connect/love
Can you share what it has been like for you to be a member of a chapter that meets virtually?
I’m new to the chapter so not yet.
