PEER GROUPS OF THE NEW YORK CITY CHAPTER
The heart and soul of Women's Connection is in its small groups. This is where women connect, face-to-face, to explore what’s next … together.

You may be a brand new Women's Connection member looking forward to participating in our community of women. Or you may already be benefiting from your Women's Connection membership but still interested in connecting with even more like-minded members.  Starting or joining a Peer Group is a wonderful way to do both.

Peer Groups are different from Special Interest Groups (SIGs) which are organized around a common theme, interest or activity. Nor are Peer Groups the same as Neighborhood Groups which are a feature of the Caring Collaborative and focus on issues of wellness.

SO WHAT DIFFERENTIATES A PEER GROUP?
Peer Groups are monthly informal, thought-provoking and stimulating discussions that are about each member’s current lives and future possibilities.  This is all done in a safe and supportive environment, typically with 8 to 10 members. The discussion leader is a different member each month so that responsibility is shared across the group.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT AT A PEER GROUP MEETING?
Each Peer Group generates topics of mutual interest and relevance to its members’ lives. Discussion topics range from those that are lighthearted and fun to others that help members to define and think through their futures. Each group works to find a comfortable way to select topics and take part in the responsibilities that makes shared group leadership easy. Every group has an experienced Women's Connection facilitator to help them during the initial meetings or at any point where they feel they need re-direction.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A PEER GROUP?
A Peer Group provides opportunities for connection, new friendships, and mutually supportive exploration. The intention of a group is for women to share and learn from each other. While the group is meant to create a supportive environment, it is neither a support group nor a therapy group, and cannot substitute for professional help when a member may confront a
personal life crisis and need special assistance.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO SUPPORT A PEER GROUP’S SUCCESS?
The successful Peer Group is one where everyone makes a solid commitment to attend the monthly meetings unless traveling or encountering an emergency. This commitment is vitally important so that members feel they are there for each other and can rely on the group for compassionate support.
