About this event
Thursday, November 5, 2026, 11:00 AM
Take a trip back in time on our docent led tour of Merchant’s House: NYC’s only 19th-century family home. We will visit the rear garden and four floors of period rooms filled with the original furnishings and personal possessions of the Tredwells, the wealthy merchant family who lived in the house for almost 100 years with their Irish servants.
You’ll also see the museum’s astonishing recent discovery: an intact site of the early Underground Railroad. In 1832, Joseph Brewster, an abolitionist, designed and built the house to include a narrow passageway beneath a built-in chest of drawers to harbor freedom-seekers.
*Optional Lunch: Pay-On-Your-Own
After the tour, we’ll head to a nearby restaurant for an optional lunch to continue the conversation about the walking tour and enjoy each other’s company. Please plan to bring cash to cover your meal.
