Described by The New York Times as “one of America’s finest artists and singers,” mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade has enriched the world of classical music for over five decades. Known to family, friends, and fans as “Flicka,” she continues to be one of the music world’s most beloved singers.

Ms. von Stade’s career has taken her to the stages of the world’s great opera houses and concert halls. She began at the top, receiving a contract from Sir Rudolf Bing during the Metropolitan Opera auditions. Since her debut in 1970, she has performed nearly all her signature roles with the company. The Metropolitan Opera celebrated her milestone anniversaries with new productions of The Merry Widow in 2000 and Pelléas et Mélisande in 1995. She has appeared with every leading American opera company, including San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Los Angeles Opera. In 2018, she sang Danny in the world premiere of Sky on Swings by Lembit Beecher and Hannah Moscovitch at Opera Philadelphia. Her career in Europe has been equally distinguished with appearances in new productions at Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, and the Paris Opera.   She was also a recitalist and concert artist, and she recorded more than a hundred albums and videos.

This masterclass is a unique opportunity to experience the artistry and expertise of this legendary mezzo, as she coaxes and inspires the possibilities from the carefully selected roster of Curtis vocal artists.  Each student usually sings his/her piece straight through and then will receive comments and coaching from Ms. von Stade - often blossoming with immediate improvement!
