About this event
Black Water is a novella written by Joyce Carol Oates about the Chappaquiddick incident of July 1969. Oates portrayed this historical event as a Roman a clef —a fictionalized account of real events. The plot covers the infamous event in which U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy crashed a car and caused the death by drowning of passenger Mary Jo Kopechne. This novella was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for fiction.
