Dr. Katalin “Kati” Kerikó
Nobel Prize winner for research leading to the COVID vaccine

Dr. Katalin Karikó grew up in rural Hungary and came to America with a radical idea: that a tiny molecule called mRNA could be used to fight disease. The scientific community thought she was wasting her time. Her scientific colleagues derided or ignored her research. At work, she was demoted repeatedly. Most people would have quit.

She didn't, and her stubbornness changed the world. Her research became the foundation for the COVID-19 vaccine, and in 2023, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. But this talk isn't about the science. It's a celebration of the scientist herself — sharp, funny, and remarkably clear-eyed about her own extraordinary journey.

Jan Blustein is a member of the New York City Chapter. She was a Professor of Health Policy and Medicine at New York University, where she researched the health and well-being of older people. In her retirement, she enjoys meeting with friends, learning about American history, and working out.
