Come join us as we travel to Washington, DC to explore the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Our visit to the museum starts with an 11 a.m. docent-led, one hour tour of the outstanding Grandma Moses exhibit. Grandma Moses: A Good Day’s Work repositions Anna Mary Robertson, aka “Grandma” Moses, (1860–1961) as a multidimensional force in American art, whose beloved painted recollections of rural life earned her a distinctive place in the cultural imagination of the postwar era. Drawing its name from Moses’ reflection on her own life as a “good day’s work,” the exhibition reveals how Moses’ art fused creativity, labor, and memories from a century-long life.
After the tour you will be able to browse the renowned collections of the museum, which has the largest collection of New Deal art and exceptional collections of contemporary craft, American impressionist paintings and masterpieces from the Gilded Age, as well as visiting other special exhibits, such as State Fairs: Growing American Crafts, the first major exhibition to survey American state fairs’ extraordinary and unconventional crafts from the nineteenth century to the present. There are also other Smithsonian museums nearby such as the National Portrait Gallery.
Lunch is on your own, with many restaurants available within a couple of blocks of the museum.
Please plan to arrive at the museum no later than 10:45 am.
