Have you ever wondered what it would’ve been like…
…to receive medical care during the Civil War?
…to be operated on before the germ theory was discovered?
…to know the nearest doctor was four hours away by horse and buggy?
Visit a one-room doctor’s office (c.1852) and join Dr. Stonestreet, Rockville’s 19th century country doctor, portrayed by author and Master Docent Clarence Hickey. We will learn about Dr. Stonestreet’s medical education and the medical and surgical procedures used in his office, during house calls, and as a Union Army surgeon during the Civil War, as well as changes in science and medicine during the latter 19th century.
We will visit the Museum’s 19th century medicinal garden to see many of the plants and herbs grown for 19th century medicinal purposes. Dr. Stonestreet will tell us about some of the home remedies made from these plants, and we will be able to talk with Montgomery History’s corps of Master Gardeners about their work and the plants they tend.
Afterward, we will have lunch at Yu Noodles at 387 East Gude Drive in Rockville
