Our visit to the Rose Valley Museum, located in Thunderbird Lodge (Rose Valley (Media) PA) includes a talk about the fascinating history of this community and building, and a docent-led tour of the Museum’s Arts and Crafts period collections.
The Rose Valley was started in 1901 when architect William Lightfoot Price formed the Rose Valley Association to create an Arts and Crafts utopian community on 80 acres of land he purchased near former mill sites, aiming to blend art with life through handcrafted goods and pastoral living.
Mr. Price purchased old abandoned mills and farm houses. The guild hall, or Artsman’s Hall, is now home to Hedgerow Theatre and the old furniture shop contains the Borough Office and the home of the remnants of a community organization “The Rose Valley Folk”. Although the original ideal faded, over 100 historic buildings exist as part of the Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. Price’s architectural designs attracted other prominent architects, Walter F. Price, Howell Lewis Shay, Pope Barney, and William Gray Purcell, to design and live in homes in the wooded environs of Rose Valley.
Price turned an 18th century stone barn into two artist’s studios for Alice and Charles Stephens, connecting the living quarters with an octagonal stairwell. The home is the epitome of the Arts & Crafts Movement “to live where you work.” The Museum's collection of Rose Valley furniture, pottery, and publications is located in the upper studio; current exhibits are in the lower studio; and the living room is a shop containing Arts and Crafts furniture, art, metalwork and other items.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The Lodge is handicap accessible only to the lower studio.
