The Grey Art Museum, guardian to the New York University Art Collection, was founded in 1975 and cares for over 6,000 objects. The latest exhibit, Irrititja Kuwarri Tjungu: Contemporary Aboriginal Painting from the Australian Desert, is the first U.S. exhibition to survey Australia’s most globally recognized Aboriginal art movement.

 

For the past five decades, Papunya Tula Artists—the oldest Aboriginal-owned arts organization in Australia—has stood at the forefront of contemporary Aboriginal art, producing some of the most iconic art and artists in Australian history. Organized by the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia in partnership with Papunya Tula Artists, Irrititja Kuwarri Tjungu (translated as “past and present together”) features some 120 works in its presentation at the Grey Art Museum, including a suite of fifty paintings commissioned for the 50th anniversary of Papunya Tula Artists.

We will tour the exhibit with one of the NYU student guides. The tour will be about 45 minutes with time for questions and discussion at the end. After the tour, there will be time to explore some of the other collections.

When you arrive, tell the staff at the front desk that you're here for a tour (they'll be expecting you). Your guide will meet you near the front desk.
