Rescheduled from November, Lisa is hosting as we visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum to explore and celebrate our diverse, multicultural country through video installations and art exhibits. We'll start with Shahzia Sikander's The Last Post. This video artwork critically considers the legacy of British colonialism in Asia using Sikander’s signature approach of infusing Indo-Persian miniature paintings with a contemporary perspective.
And then we can explore other shows including temporary and permanent collection, plus the open vault in the Luce gallery.
Grandma Moses: A Good Day’s Work sheds new light on a beloved body of work by Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses (1860 – 1961). Grandma Moses used creativity, hope, and togetherness as tools for shaping a life that she metaphorically likened to “a good day’s work.”
Isaac Julian's Lessons of the Hour-Frederick Douglass. A presentation of Isaac Julian’s tour de force moving image installation interweaves reenactments across five screens to create a vivid picture of 19th century activist, writer, orator, and philosopher, Frederick Douglass.
The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Luce Foundation Center for American Art is the first visible art storage and study center in Washington, D.C. This innovative public space on SAAM's third and fourth floors offers visitors new ways to experience American art.
We'll meet at noon in the G street lobby, near the gift shop entrance. The Smithsonian American Art Museum is located at 8th and G streets, Northwest, Washington, (in the same building as the Portrait Gallery.) It's right at Gallery Place Metro.
Following the exhibits, around 1:15, we will have lunch together at Jaleo, Jose Andres' flagship restaurant in DC.
Event Host: Lisa Rubenstein. Repeat attendees will be invited to host a future event.
