About this event

Be a Visionary!

Give the gift of sight. Sort used eyewear for distribution to those in need.

Women’s Connection members are invited to a designated volunteer opportunity with the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington (POB) followed by lunch at a Union Station eatery (self-pay).

Every year, POB collects thousands of eyeglasses to be cleaned, sorted, and prepared for distribution to those in need—locally and internationally. With your help, used eyewear will have a second life and provide vision to those in need. Let’s make a difference—one pair of glasses at a time!

What we’ll do:

1. Sort, clean and label gently used eyeglasses for distribution to underserved communities

2. Enjoy a hands-on experience while bonding with other Women’s Connection members

POB welcomes your contribution of used eyewear: They accept eyewear for adults and children - prescription lenses, as well as, over the counter generic lenses. Friends and family members can be a source of used eyewear so be sure to inquire about possible contributions. Likewise, hair salons often have a box of inexpensive glasses that clients have left behind and never retrieved!

No experience necessary—just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to help!

You can learn more about the organization at www.myeyes.org.

Metro: POB is a 10-minute walk from Union Station metro. Take the Red Line to Union Station, exit to Massachusetts Avenue and turn left, walk one block to 2nd Street NE, cross the street, turn left and POB is the second building on the right - directly adjacent to the gas station.

Where to Park: Limited street parking is available, and POB may have some garage spaces in their building.

What to Wear: Casual clothes since the sorting process sometimes entails a bit of dust.

Upon Arrival: Ring the entry bell, and a volunteer coordinator will open the door. We will sort in the main conference room on the second floor, which is accessible via elevator.

Lunch: After sorting, we will stroll over to Union Station and select an eatery of our choice.
