Community Impact - A Day in the Humble Design Chicago Warehouse.
In 2009, Treger Strasberg found out one of her friends had recently become homeless. When the friend found an affordable house, she had nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. Her children were sleeping on piles of blankets. Treger and her friend Ana started collecting items to furnish the home. They called their friends, neighbors, people they didn’t know—asking for beds, linens, furniture, and kitchen items.
The furniture kept coming, so Treger called 9 different shelters and said “We have all this stuff, and we want our donations to go directly to families who are in need.” The shelters all responded: “That’s really a great idea, but nobody does that.” She identified a hole in the system, and Humble Design was born.
Volunteers like those on your team are what enable us to serve families transitioning out of homelessness across Chicago. *** IMPORTANT *** Given the importance of capturing our volunteer efforts, in addition to registering on this page, we ask that you also sign up here so we have a record of those who have come out in support of Humble Design.
What to Bring
We provide cleaning supplies, furnishings, accessories, and other helpful items for the day. If
your group is interested in bringing additional items, we’d be happy to discuss ideas with you.
Volunteers are welcome to bring their own drinks onsite. We ask that you leave all valuables at home.
If you can no longer attend this event, please cancel immediately on this page. If you do not cancel your registration, you will be preventing other volunteers from attending because there is a limit of 15 for this event.
