For our March meeting, we will explore the National Museum of Asian Art (Smithsonian) on the Mall which is offering the first three exhibits as part of an ongoing exploration of “Japan in Focus,” a theme of particular interest to the Museum since it reports that Freer’s first purchase was a painted fan from Japan. We'll start with an exhibit presenting aspects of tea ceremony culture: “Knotted Clay: Raku Ceramics and Tea” displaying the distinctive, hand-molded ceramics known as Raku made by hand—a process described as “knotting clay”—as opposed to using a wheel. Then, as time and your inclination permit, also tour the exhibits on modern Japanese metal-working and printmaking, as well as the permanent exhibit of Art of Japan.
Please meet at noon in the Mall facing lobby of the Freer Gallery. Stick with the group or browse on your own, and then return to that lobby at 1:30 when we'll head to lunch at the recently reopened Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian which is just a few blocks away.
