EVENT FULL

Volunteers are needed to staff overnight at the Respite Shelter at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn for one night on either Tuesday, May 6th or Wednesday, May 7th. The shelter provides a warm, safe place to sleep, along with a hot meal, for 6-8 men nightly.

A night at the Respite Shelter is safe, easy, and meaningful. It involves less than 12 hours (between 7:30pm and 6:30 am, during most of which you will be asleep—as you would be if you were home). There will be cots and clean linens on site. Please plan to arrive by 7:30 pm and plan to depart by 6:30 am the next morning, after the guests leave.

The guests are grateful to be housed at a faith-based shelter, where they can enjoy a delicious hot meal with volunteers and where they feel much safer than they would in a city shelter. Volunteers are free to interact with the shelter guests, but in general, the men are familiar with the shelter routine, and they usually go right to their beds after dinner. (They sleep on cots in the rotunda; the overnight volunteers sleep separately in one of the classrooms.)

If you're thinking about volunteering, there’s plenty of support. The overnight volunteers are always paired. You may choose to volunteer with a friend or you may be paired with a congregant and make a new friend over the evening. When you arrive, an evening coordinator will be there to brief you on how the evening will progress and what your responsibilities will be. You’ll receive detailed written instructions with this information as well, complete with phone numbers to call if any questions should arise.

If you need to cancel, please provide at least 48 hours’ notice to ngoodhart.volunteering@gmail.com.
